Breast Milk and Breastfeeding for NICU Infants Video

This two-hour video provides basic information necessary for public health and healthcare professionals to support breastfeeding and to implement best practices in breastfeeding management.

After viewing the program, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the benefits of breast milk for premature infants and their mothers
  • Describe the logistical challenges involved in providing breast milk for premature infants and transitioning them to feeding at the breast
  • Describe hospital and community resources that can support nursing mothers with premature infants
  • Discuss and understand case studies on breastfeeding

Program presenters include Ruth A. Lawrence, M.D., author of Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession, Professor of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Rochester; Richard Schanler, MD, Chief of NICU, North Shore Long Island Hospital; and Karlene H. Hill, BS, RN, IBCLC, CCE, CLC, and CIMI OB/GYN Nursing, University of Rochester/Strong Memorial Hospital.

This program was originally broadcast from the University at Albany's Women's Health Grand Rounds, a series of on-going satellite broadcasts sponsored by the School of Public Health with the New York State Department of Health Bureau for Women's Health.
